Further Afield
We are fortunate in the Dalbeattie and Colvend Coast area to be surrounded by other interesting towns and places, all of which are within easy reach:
Dumfries: The main town for Dumfries and Galloway. It was home to Robert Burns for the last five years before his death, and you can follow a Burns Trail by visiting The Globe Inn, Burns' House, the Robert Burns Centre, St Michael's Churchyard (where he is buried), and Ellisland Farm, all in or near dumfries and all connected to the Scottish Poet.
Kirkcudbright: Known as the Artists' Town from its connections with AE Hornell and other artists known as 'The Glasgow Boys'. More on their website.
Castle Douglas: Known as The Food Town. Good for strolling and shopping. Close to Threave House and Gardens owned by the National Trust, and Threave Castle run by Historic Scotland. More>>
Wigtown: Known as The Book Town. As you can guess, lots of bookshops. Very popular Wigtown Annual Book Festival Sept 22-Oct 1.
Auchencairn: This a really attractive coastal village with a considerable heritage, at one time infamous as a centre of smuggling. Set slightly back from the sea's edge, the main street climbs up from the burn-side and fine views of Heston island, and the bay it guards, are obtained.More about Auchencairn on their website.
