Further Afield: This quiet corner of South West Scotland is full of surprises. Discover enchanting landscapes and a coastline which is one of the most varied in Scotland, with dramatic craggy outcrops and long sandy beaches, and a whole range and variety of walks.

Nearby is Galloway Forest Park, Britain's largest forest park at three hundred square miles, which includes moorland and lochs, and stretches from seashore to mountain tops, and is the habitat for a variety of plants and wildlife.  Galloway Forest Park is also one of the darkest places on the planet at night and is the UK's first 'Dark Sky' park, a haven for astronomers.

If you prefer a cityscape, you can reach historic Carlisle, Glasgow or Edinburgh all within a couple of hours.  There is the birthplace or Scotland's National poet, Robbie Burns at Alloway near Ayr,  or visit his home at Ellisland Farm just outside Dumfries and  have a drink in his favourite watering hole (or Houff), the Globe Inn, in nearby Dumfries.  You will also find his final resting place in St Michael's Churchyard in Dumfries and a statue of Jean Armour on the opposite side of the road to the church.
