Visitors to Dalbeattie will be struck by it's snug location in the valley of the river Urr,  surrounded by the majesty of Dalbeattie Forest.

Climb to the Moyle in Dalbeattie Forest, or Screel Hill near Palnackie, and experience the breathtaking views to the Colvend Coast and the Solway estuary. Dalbeattie and the Colvend Coast is great if you like walking, with many varied walks, from  pleasant forest walks, to rugged coastal walk, all with fantastic scenery in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Or if you like a longer walk, you can walk the Southern Upland Way through wild mountains. The whole walk from West to East is 340 km!

For those keen golfers, there are 3 local golf Courses plus a championship course at Southerness on the Solway Coast .

If you enjoy water sports, there's nothing finer than sailing from Kippford in the Solway Estuary, or windsurfing, waterskiing, rowing or canoeing on Loch Ken.

Or if you prefer some quieter pursuits the woodland and coastal pathways offer ample opportunity for birdwatching , as do Mersehead, Threave Castle Wildfowl Reserve, and Auchencairn's Hugh Paton walk, all of which have hides where you can observe unobserved. And further afield there is the WWW site at Caerlaverock. More details of where you can see bird species locally. Why not download the Dumfries and Galloway brochure on Birdwatching .... but be patient, it may take a few minutes to download. More information about wildlife.

Then there's all weather tennis courts in Colliston Park, Dalbeattie which you can hire by the hour for a £5 deposit.  And there's much, much more..... river and sea fishingriding,  cycling and swimming,  all in the area, within a few miles of Dalbeattie.

And if you are feeling particularly active why not go a little further afield and climb Criffel, the highest of our coastal hills. Criffel's 1868 foot summit makes a fine viewpoint.  Access is from Ardwall Farm, New Abbey, or at Kirkbean.
